There are some traditions that remain unshaken despite decades of change - the traditions of providing soulful music to touch the hearts of students and music lovers, encouraging budding artists and preserving the rich heritage of Indian Classical Music. Keeping these traditions in mind, two ex-students of St.Xavier’s College, the late Chandu Kapadia and Yusuf Gandhi, set up with much enthusiasm, the Indian Music Group back in 1973.
The IMG, as it is fondly called, was set up to revive the rich Indian heritage of classical music, popularize it among the youth and encourage them to carry forward this legacy. Their cause was supported by the then Principal of St.Xavier’s College, Fr. Lancy Pereira, backed by the unstinted support of the staff of St.Xavier’s College and Britannia Industries Limited.
The IMG actively organizes Baithaks and Mini-Baithaks that provide a platform to upcoming artists, Music Appreciation Courses and Lecture Demonstrations throughout the year. The IMG-Britannia Music Library, located on campus and which is the most important part of the IMG, has a unique collection of over 2000 hours of live music, recordings of present day artists (both Carnatic as well as Hindustani) and maestros of yesteryears. In addition to the music, there is also a large collection of books delving into various aspects of classical music.
Over the years, Britannia Industries Limited has provided sustained support to the IMG, in a display of its characteristic ethos of being a socially responsible corporate entity, dedicated to the cause of promoting Indian Classical Music.
